What is a dental hygienist? A guide for Bushey patients

17th August 2026

If your dentist has ever suggested you book in with the hygienist, you might have wondered exactly what that appointment involves and how it’s different from a routine check-up. Here at Chiltern Avenue Dental Practice, we see patients from Bushey, Carpenders Park, Watford, Oxhey, and surrounding areas for hygiene appointments every week, so it’s a question we’re asked often. Here’s what a dental hygienist actually does and why seeing one regularly matters for your long-term oral health.

The role of a dental hygienist

A dental hygienist is a qualified dental professional whose main focus is the health of your gums, rather than the general condition of your teeth (which is your dentist’s territory). Hygienists are specially trained to prevent, spot and treat gum disease, and to help you build habits at home that keep problems from creeping back.

Working alongside your dentist, a hygienist plays a key part in the preventative side of dentistry: catching small issues before they become big, expensive, or painful ones.

Why gum health matters so much

Plaque builds up on your teeth every day. Left in place, it hardens into tartar, which harbours bacteria that irritate the gums. In its earliest stage, this is called gingivitis, which shows up as redness, swelling or bleeding when you brush, and is fully treatable. If it’s ignored, though, it can progress to periodontitis, a more serious condition where the gum and bone supporting your teeth start to break down. At that stage, damage can’t be reversed, only managed, and in severe cases it can lead to loose or lost teeth.

This is exactly the kind of progression a hygienist is trained to intercept early, which is why regular visits matter so much more than they might seem to.

What happens at a hygiene appointment?

A typical visit starts with an assessment of your gums, teeth and the bone underneath, checking for inflammation, bleeding or any early warning signs. Your hygienist may also take small measurements around the base of each tooth to track gum health over time.

The main event is usually a “scale and polish”: a thorough clean that removes built-up plaque and tartar, followed by a polish that leaves teeth smooth and noticeably fresher. Removing that rough tartar surface also makes it harder for new plaque to stick, so the benefits carry on well after you leave the chair.

For patients with more advanced gum disease, deeper cleaning beneath the gum line may be needed to keep bacteria under control. Alongside all of this, your hygienist will usually offer personalised advice on brushing technique, interdental brushes and flossing, tailored to your mouth rather than generic guidance.

More than just a nice smile

Keeping gum disease in check isn’t only about comfort and appearance. Research has linked poor gum health to wider health issues, including heart disease and diabetes, which is one more reason regular hygiene visits are worth prioritising even if your teeth feel fine.

How often should you go?

Most patients benefit from a hygiene appointment roughly every six months, alongside their routine dental check-up. If you’ve had gum disease before, or you’re at higher risk, your dentist or hygienist might suggest coming in more often to stay ahead of it.
